5 Ways to Prepare for Your New Home Decor

Hey y’all! Today I have another quick update on my home transition. If you’ve been following along on the blog then you know that I bought a macrame wall hanging in Mexico and now I want to shift my decor to better fit with it, but I’m also still pretty attached to my current stuff so it has been a process. Or it was until I found CORT. Now that I know that I can get furniture on a short term basis and that I don’t have to fully replace everything forever, I feel like I’ve been bitten by the design bug. I’ve been browsing everything, getting inspiration and pinning most of it to Pinterest. I finally feel like I know the direction I need to go.

So today I wanted to share some tips that I’ve learned along the way about redecorating.

• Take inventory of what you have to see what’s salvageable. Just because you’re changing your decor style doesn’t mean there won’t already be some items that may still work with the new direction. Any pieces that you can incorporate now will only help to save room in your budget later, so before you get rid of anything ask yourself these questions:
  • Will this fit my new decor vision?
  • Would I buy this again if I saw it in a store right now?
  • Where would this go if I decide to keep it?
• Make Space. Whatever isn’t going to work is going to have to go. Sell it, store it or donate it. There are a lot of resources online for reselling and that extra cash can help a lot towards your new stuff. I could write an entire blog post on just ways to make space, maybe I’ll include it in my newsletter but the gist of it is:
  • Donate anything you no longer want or need to friends, family or local thrift stores.
  • Sell any big ticket items and make a little profit. Try selling platforms like Craigslist, Offer Up, Poshmark or even a good old fashioned garage sale.
  • Store items you are unsure about getting rid of to revisit at a later time. Try incorporating them in another area of your home or shell out some cash to get a storage unit.

• Plan out your space. Now that you’ve removed the items you no longer need it’s time to take a look at that inventory and get a list going of the items you need to complete your space.
• Shopping time! Be sure to compare websites to ensure you get the most bang for your buck. Do your research, think about your current situation and decide what purchase route makes the most sense for you. Lease, rent to own, financing, you have a lot of options to consider. Personally, the short term rental option from CORT is exactly what I’m looking for since I’m wanting to furnish a place I’m only renting. I’ll invest in my forever furniture later down the road, once I have my forever home. Now, before you order or make any purchases be sure to ask yourself a few things:
  • Where will this go in my home? This information will also come in handy for any delivery men.
  • Will it fit? -Be sure to measure and then re-measure before any large purchases, furniture or art.
  • Do I love it? If you don’t love it then leave it. This isn’t like shopping for clothing you’ll only wear sporadically, this is something you’ll look at every single day (even if it is short term). Choose wisely.
• Do a deep clean. Now that you’ve cleared up space and placed your order you should do a deep, thorough clean. Dust, clean the windows, sweep, mop, steam, hell go ahead and put a fresh coat of paint on the walls- do all of the things to refresh your home and get it ready for your new items.

The most important thing to remember is that redecorating is and should be fun! Try not to let it stress you out. Using platforms like Pinterest or the CORT blog to organize my ideas and getting furniture from CORT has really helped take the hair pulling, question every decision, stress out of everything for me.
