Fixed to Eat: Margarita Taste-Off in Austin, TX #NationalMargaritaDay

February 22nd was #NationalMargaritaDay “supposedly”, you guys know I think those national days are a joke, with them happening multiple times a year. Seriously, I feel like at least once a month I hear of it being National Margarita, wine or Pizza day. Whatever, I’m here for it. It’s not like we need an excuse to drink but we’ll take it!

I decided to take this national holiday and actually celebrate, it did fall on a Saturday after all. I set out this weekend to find the best House Margaritas in Austin. A weak attempt I’m not going to lie. I’m just not as strong of a drinker as I used to be and the three places I did make it to each had margs that packed a hell of a punch. So without any further delay, let’s get to the taste-off shall we?

Fresa’s

I love Fresa’s chicken and easily go there once a week for the Power Bowl. The patio is sprawling and dog friendly, making it a great place to hangout in the warmer months. Plus, they have some of the best house made ice cream, available by the pint. Theirs is the only ice cream I’ve ever paid $10 a pint for-it’s that good!

The house marg here did not disappoint either! It was crisp, strong and still tasty. A great house margarita. Sort of a small serving size but it still packs a punch. You can get the house margarita here frozen or on the rocks.

Gabrielas Downtown

Strong Margaritas and the perfect ground level view of downtown Austin. The food here is amazing but I especially love going for brunch because the vibe is unmatched! If you like an outdoor, lively, DJ infused brunch then this is the spot for you just be prepared to wait, you aren’t able to make reservations ahead of time.

Now for their house marg, (not pictured) I’m not going to lie to you guys-it just wasn’t my favorite. Out of the three places I tried it was actually my least favorite. Firstly, I had ordered a house margarita with no salt, NO SALT, and it came caked in salt. The entire rim was covered in an obscene amount even for someone who would want a salted rim and for someone who asks specifically for no salt this was a deal breaker for me. The salt was so excessive and the drink so full that it inevitable migrated in to the drink making it almost intolerable. Couple that with the fact that they use a gold or darker tequila and it was just all wrong for my tastebuds. This was really disappointing too, because typically I love the cocktails at Gabriela’s, especially the pineapple drink.

Anthem

Anthem is a wildcard for this bunch as it’s not a classic Tex-Mex restaurant but actually Tex-Asian, so originally I wasn’t even considering this as a stop but alas the power of social influence, they posted a marg to their story on Instagram and I was sold! Thankfully so too because the house margarita at Anthem was hands down my favorite of the day!

The margarita here is the ideal serving size and appropriately salted on just one side of the glass. The flavors were light but still packed the necessary punch. It’s easy to overlook a house margarita with Anthem’s creative cocktail offerings but I highly recommend giving one a try next time you’re in!

All in all, each of the restaurants has a ton to offer and are on my constant rotation of stops in Austin. Anthem just so happened to have the best house margarita in my opinion! I’ve linked each of their locations above!
