We just had a solid two months straight of rain in Austin, full on flooding the lakes, boil your water levels of rain. It was intense y’all. In the past, I’d avoid a rainy day like the plague. Why would I want to be out on slick roads with frizzy hair, and soggy socks? Um, no thanks!
The problem wasn’t the rain though, it was me. I hadn’t invested in good rain boots or proper rainwear and I never had an umbrella in reach so getting dressed and remaining decently cute throughout a rainy day was always a struggle. After having to finally face the rain, or stay inside for eight weeks, I think I have dressing for the rain down to a science. So today I want to share the rainy day essentials to keep you looking fab all day, no matter what the forecast is.
First things first, you need to get your hands on a style of rain boots that you love. I had some wild, colorful ones in high school and literally never wore them. They were uncomfortable, bulky, kind of stuck to/rubbed my leg and to be honest they were just loud and didn’t match well with much. Every time I would put them on with an outfit I would immediately take them off. Even choosing to wear ballet flats in torrential level flooding over wearing them, they were that bad. I learned quickly that I wasn’t “that girl” and that was fine with me, sort of. I mean, I didn’t really see other options for rain boots besides shiny bold colored styles, crazy prints or expensive designer styles and none of them were ever “me”. So I assumed I just wasn’t a rain boot girl.
But WTF? I’m just supposed to live my life with wet feet when it rains?? I don’t think so! Long story short I eventually found a suuuper cute ankle style in a sort of matte black and fell in love. I got them in and guess what? I actually wore them. I was officially a rain boot girl, I had found my style! More importantly, I had found my brand. I now have 4 pairs of Chooka Boots, all waterproof and all getting worn. The latest addition being these glam pink velvet babes. How freakin chic are these? On top of being sooo cute they’re actually comfortable. They are lightweight and mid ankle, apart from my other Chooka boots they did run a bit small so I had to order up a size.

It’s time, you need to find an umbrella! Actually you need at least two, one for the house and one for in your car. I’d suggest one solid style and one fun print or pattern. I just love this funky striped one that I got last year at Art Basel and I also have a solid black miniature sized one that can fit into my purse. Long gone should be the days where you use your hands to shield your head from the rain. Hint, it doesn’t actually work! Below are some umbrella styles I’m currently eyeing and hoping to add to the growing collection.
I mean, personally this is my go-to when it’s raining because it doesn’t show “change” as much if you catch my drift. If my hair is straight on a rainy day it’s not straight for long but my curly hair only gets curlier ha. If you have hair that falls flat you’re still golden because loose curls are very cute. If you can pull off a ponytail or high bun more power to you, that’s just never been “my look”.
If you’re running around in some lightweight material that goes see through the second you get wet you’re not doing it right. For me, I like to wear dark colors in sturdy or water repellant type materials. My liquid leggings are perfect for not showing rain if they happen to pick up a few drops and my blazer is a thick stiff material that would need to be poured on to have any effect on the structure. I almost always wear a faux-leather or patent leather purse in the rain to ensure that my stuff stays dry on the inside and the outside remains in tact.
So you see, it’s not impossible to dress and stay cute in the rain! Just follow these easy steps next time you have to plan a rainy day outfit.
